Today, Tom and I took a trip up to Mount Yaedake in the northern part of Okinawa to one of the several Cherry Blossom festivals going on around the island for the next few weeks. The Mount Yaedake Festival allows both pedestrians and cars to climb the mountain on a road lined with over 7000 blooming cherry blossom trees. At the top, there is a lookout point over 1400 ft high with a view of the East China Sea.
Mount Yaedake is host to the Yaedake Communications site for the U.S. Air Force. When the communication site became automated, the citizens of the nearby town of Motobu were asked what they would like as a way to say thank you for the use of the land. The citizens only request was the road leading to the top of Mount Yaedake be lined with cherry blossom trees - this year was the 35th annual Yaedake Cherry Blossom Festival.
